- Finish with mixed timed practice. Combine this topic with other medical-surgical questions and practice moving from assessment to priority action without relying on the disorder name. Review timing, omissions, and unsafe priorities after the set.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping at the rash during an allergic reaction. A skin finding may be an early cue, but new airway, breathing, or circulatory changes show progression. Reassess ABC and escalate when the reaction threatens perfusion or ventilation.
- Using discoid and systemic lupus as interchangeable labels. The corrective cue is the distribution of disease: cutaneous findings point toward a skin-focused assessment, while findings beyond the skin require attention to systemic involvement.
- Missing possible renal involvement in systemic lupus. New edema, altered urine output or characteristics, and blood pressure changes should prompt focused assessment and reporting. A visible skin manifestation does not exclude a more urgent internal problem.
- Expecting a dramatic inflammatory response in immunosuppression. Reduced immune response can make deterioration less obvious. Treat subtle changes, unexpected symptoms, and exposure concerns as assessment cues rather than waiting for a striking presentation.
- Choosing comfort measures before the threat that can cause rapid harm. Pain, fatigue, and persistent polyarthritis matter, but they should not outrank airway compromise, hypotension, or new organ-system changes. Use ABC and immediate physiologic risk to set priority.
