Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a disease from fever alone. Fever is a nonspecific cue. Correct the reasoning by checking the full pattern: respiratory and mucosal findings, lesion stage and distribution, exposure risk, hydration, mental status, and progression.
- Waiting for confirmation before using precautions. A child may transmit infection while testing is pending. The safety principle is to act on the suspected route, limit contact, use appropriate PPE, and communicate the concern according to facility policy.
- Missing the urgency of nuchal rigidity or pink signs. Stiff neck with fever and two or more pink signs should trigger chart-based IMCI classification and prompt escalation. Do not let a normal appetite, a modest temperature, or one reassuring observation cancel a danger sign.
- Prioritizing the label over ABC and hydration. Knowing the infection does not replace assessment of breathing, circulation, intake, urine output, responsiveness, and fatigue. Reassess after interventions because a child can worsen quickly.
- Giving treatment that is not supported by the order or assessment. Fever does not automatically establish a need for antibiotics, and medication safety requires verification of the prescription, allergy status, route, and weight-related checks. Use supportive care and prescribed therapy while escalating findings that suggest complications.
- Forgetting disease-specific complications. A male child with mumps needs assessment for testicular pain or swelling, while diphtheria requires vigilance for airway, cardiac, and neurologic deterioration. Link each complication to a monitoring cue and a prompt escalation action.
